What Is a Staging Site and Why Your Business Website Needs One

October 14, 20261 min read

Updating a live website can go wrong in ways that are easy to avoid: a plugin update breaks the checkout, a new design shifts the layout on phones, or a small edit takes the whole site offline. A staging site is a simple way to catch these problems before your customers see them.

What a staging site is

A staging site is a private copy of your website that looks and works like the live one but is not visible to the public. You make changes there first, test them, and only publish them to the live site once you are confident they work.

What it protects you from

It protects you from updates that conflict with each other, design changes that break on certain devices, forms or payment steps that stop working, and mistakes made while editing. Finding these on a copy costs you a little time. Finding them on the live site can cost you enquiries and sales.

When you should use one

Use staging before software or plugin updates, redesigns, new features, changes to forms or checkout, and any work done by a developer. The more important the site is to your business, the more worthwhile it is.

What to test before going live

Click through the main pages, submit your contact form, run through a test purchase if you sell online, and check the site on a phone and on more than one browser. A short checklist that you repeat each time makes this routine.

Keep backups as well

Staging reduces the chance of problems but does not remove it. Take a backup before publishing changes, so that you can roll back quickly if something unexpected slips through.

Our approach

For the sites we build and maintain, we test changes before they go live and keep backups so we can recover quickly. If your current website is updated directly on the live version, we can help you set up a safer process.
