Why Website Performance Affects Your Search Rankings

September 20, 20262 min read

It's well established that Google's ranking systems factor in page experience signals — commonly referred to as Core Web Vitals — alongside traditional relevance signals like content and links. A technically sound, fast-loading site won't outrank genuinely more relevant content on its own, but a slow, unstable page can hold back a site that would otherwise rank well.

What actually makes a website slow

In our experience, slow websites usually come down to a handful of recurring causes: unoptimized images that are far larger than the space they're displayed in, too many third-party scripts (chat widgets, analytics tools, ad trackers) loading on every page regardless of whether they're needed, and page builders or heavy plugin stacks that load far more code than a given page actually uses.

Hosting matters too — a site running on shared, underpowered hosting will struggle under real traffic even if the front-end code itself is efficient.

Why it affects more than rankings

Page speed has a direct, measurable relationship with how many visitors stay long enough to take action. A visitor who has to wait several seconds for a page to become usable is far more likely to leave before ever seeing your offer, regardless of how good that offer is. In that sense, performance is as much a conversion issue as it is an SEO issue.

What a technically sound site looks like

A well-built site serves properly sized and compressed images, loads only the scripts a given page actually needs, and uses a modern rendering approach (like static generation or server rendering) instead of assembling every page from scratch in the visitor's browser. None of this is exotic — it's largely a matter of building with performance in mind from the start, rather than trying to retrofit it onto a page builder site after the fact.

Our approach

We build on modern frameworks specifically because they make this default behavior rather than an afterthought — proper image handling, code splitting and fast page loads out of the box. When we take over an existing slow site, the first step is almost always identifying which of these recurring issues is actually the bottleneck, rather than guessing.
