Android, iOS or Cross-Platform: Which Should Your App Start With?

October 27, 20262 min read

After deciding that a mobile app makes sense, the next question is where to launch it. Android and iOS have different users, different rules and different costs, and building for both at the start roughly doubles the effort unless you choose your approach carefully. The right answer depends on your audience, your budget and what the app needs to do.

Start with where your users actually are

The most useful input is data about your own customers. Check which phones the visitors to your website use, ask a sample of existing customers, and look at the market you serve. Device preferences vary a lot between countries and between customer groups, so what is popular in general may not match your audience.

Building natively for one platform

A native app is written specifically for Android or for iOS. It gives the best access to device features and the smoothest feel, and it suits you if one platform clearly dominates your audience. The cost is that reaching the other platform later means building a second app.

Cross-platform: one codebase for both

Cross-platform approaches let a team build one app that runs on both Android and iOS, sharing most of the code. This usually reduces cost and keeps the two versions consistent. It works well for many business apps, though very demanding features such as heavy graphics or deep hardware use may still need native work.

Consider a web app first

If you are still testing whether the idea works, a mobile-friendly web app can reach both platforms with no app-store process at all. Our post on choosing between a native app and a mobile-friendly website covers that decision in more detail.

Think about the features you need

Features like push notifications, offline use, the camera, location or payments affect the choice. List what the first version genuinely needs, then check that your chosen approach supports it well. Avoid choosing a platform before you know the requirements.

Plan for the app stores and for upkeep

Each store has its own review process, fees and rules, and both platforms release updates that apps need to keep up with. Budget for ongoing maintenance on each platform you support, not only the initial build.

Our approach

We help you look at your users, your budget and your required features, then recommend the simplest route to launch, whether that is one platform, a cross-platform build or a web app first. We would rather help you launch something focused than build for everything at once.
