Do You Need a Native App, or Would a Mobile-Friendly Website Do?

September 23, 20262 min read

Businesses often assume that having a mobile app is a sign of maturity — something to build once the budget allows. In practice, whether an app is the right investment depends entirely on what your users need to do on their phones, not on how established the business is.

When a mobile-friendly website is the better fit

If people mostly need to browse information, fill out a form, make a one-off purchase or check something occasionally, a responsive website usually serves them just as well as an app — without asking them to download anything first. That last point matters more than it seems: every app requires a visitor to make an active decision to install it, which is a real barrier that a website doesn't have.

A website is also faster to update. Changes go live immediately for every visitor, with no app store review process and no user sitting on an outdated version because they haven't updated yet.

When a native app genuinely earns its cost

Apps make sense when users interact with your product frequently enough that being one tap away from the home screen actually changes their behavior — daily-use tools, loyalty programs, or anything where push notifications drive real engagement. They're also the right call when you need device capabilities a website can't reliably access: offline functionality, background location tracking, camera-based features, or tight integration with device hardware.

Internal, field-facing tools are another common case — a delivery or inspection app used by staff every day benefits from the reliability and offline support a native app can offer in a way a mobile browser often can't.

The cost difference is bigger than it looks

Beyond the initial build, native apps carry ongoing costs a website doesn't: app store fees, mandatory updates to stay compatible with new OS versions, and maintaining separate iOS and Android codebases (or a cross-platform framework that still needs upkeep). None of that is a reason to avoid building an app when it's the right tool — it's a reason to be honest about whether the use case actually needs it.

A practical way to decide

Ask how often a typical user would realistically open the app in a week, and what it would let them do that a well-built mobile website couldn't. If the honest answer is "occasionally, and nothing device-specific," a responsive website is very likely the better investment. If the answer involves daily use, notifications that drive action, or device features a browser can't reach, an app is worth the additional cost.

Our approach

When a business asks us for an app, we start with that same question before writing any code. Sometimes the right recommendation is a faster, cheaper mobile-optimized website instead. Where an app is genuinely the right fit, we build for the platforms your users are actually on, using a shared codebase where it makes sense to keep costs down.
