Why Online Stores Lose Sales at Checkout (and What to Fix)

October 5, 20262 min read

It is frustrating when visitors browse your store, add products to the cart, and then leave without buying. Often the product is not the problem. The checkout is. A few common friction points account for many abandoned carts, and most of them are fixable.

Forcing people to create an account

Many shoppers just want to buy once. Making them register before paying adds a step and a reason to leave. Offering guest checkout, with an optional account afterwards, removes that barrier.

Surprise costs late in the process

Shipping fees, taxes or extra charges that only appear on the final step feel like a trick. Showing estimated delivery costs early, on the product or cart page, builds trust and avoids last-minute drop-off.

Too many steps and too many fields

Every extra form field is another chance for someone to give up. Ask only for what you need to fulfil the order, use address auto-fill where possible, and keep the number of screens low. On a phone, long forms are especially painful.

Missing the payment methods customers expect

If a customer reaches checkout and does not see a payment option they trust or normally use, many will leave. The right mix depends on your market, such as cards, UPI, wallets or bank transfer, so check what your customers actually use.

Slow or clumsy performance on mobile

A large share of shoppers buy on their phones. If your checkout is slow, has tiny buttons, or breaks on certain devices, you lose sales you would otherwise have won. Test the full purchase flow on a real phone, not just a desktop browser.

No reassurance at the moment of payment

Clear return and refund information, visible contact details, and recognisable secure payment providers help hesitant buyers finish. People pay more readily when they feel the store is legitimate and they can reach someone if something goes wrong.

Our approach

When we build or improve an online store, we treat the checkout as the most important page on the site: guest checkout, clear costs, minimal fields, the right payment methods, and testing on real mobile devices. If your store already exists, we can review the checkout flow and point out where customers are most likely dropping off.
