Signs Your Business Website Needs a Redesign, Not Just a Refresh

September 29, 20262 min read

Businesses often wait too long to redesign a website because it still technically works: it loads, it has the right information, and nobody has complained. But "still works" and "working well for you" are different things. A few clear signs point to when a refresh isn't enough and a rebuild is the better use of budget.

It looks and feels out of date

Design trends move, but the bigger issue is usually structural: small text on mobile, cluttered layouts, or a homepage that tries to say everything at once. If visitors form a negative first impression before reading a word of your content, that's costing you leads regardless of how good the business behind it is.

It doesn't work properly on phones

Most visitors to a typical business site now arrive on a phone. If your site was built years ago for desktop and has mobile bolted on afterward, expect awkward layouts, tiny tap targets, and menus that are hard to use. This is one of the clearest signs a rebuild is overdue, since retrofitting mobile onto an old structure rarely works well.

You depend on someone else to make basic changes

If updating a phone number, adding a new service or publishing a page always means waiting on a developer or the person who originally built the site, that's a sign the content management setup is limiting you. A proper content system should let your team make routine changes without needing to touch code.

It's slow, and you've stopped noticing

Teams get used to their own slow website because they see it every day. New visitors don't have that patience. If pages take several seconds to load, especially on mobile data, a meaningful share of visitors leave before they see anything, and search engines factor that experience into rankings.

It runs on outdated software with security warnings

Websites built on old CMS versions or unmaintained plugins accumulate security vulnerabilities over time. If your hosting provider has flagged outdated software, or updates have been skipped for a long time because they might "break something," the site has become a liability rather than an asset, separate from how it looks.

When a refresh is actually enough

Not every issue needs a full rebuild. If the underlying structure is sound, the CMS is current, and the site performs reasonably, but the visual design feels dated or a few pages need better content, a focused refresh, such as new visuals, updated copy or reorganised navigation, can solve it for far less than starting over.

How to decide

List your actual complaints separately from assumptions. If most issues are about how something looks, a refresh probably solves it. If they're about what you can do, such as adding content, working on phones or being secure, that points to structural problems a refresh won't fix, and a rebuild is the better investment.

Our approach

When someone asks us for a redesign, we start by figuring out which category the problem actually falls into rather than assuming a full rebuild is needed. Where a rebuild is the right call, we build on modern frameworks with proper mobile support, a content system your team can actually use, and performance and security handled from day one.
